Losing hope

Latam has been for almost two years with the main latam domains down or broken, for many reasons, the so call Latam infrastructure was down and no one who had access to solve it  or did care about. Later the domains where not paid and I wanted to pay for them and was not allow to do so. It was fix by the owner, to avoid those issues again we requested the domains to be transfer to  a latam person we can trust, the owner of this domains say yes but never did.

Later we try again with the same answer yes but never executed the transfers, those domain are fedoraproject.org name translated to Spanish and Portuguese proyectofedora.org and projetofedora.org.

The struggle about this domain was part of the reason our friend and contributor Sergio posted some sort of resignation letter a while back http://blog.sergiodj.net/post/2013-05-16-so-long-ambassadors/ domain situation has not change since and we try on meetings and talk to the owner. The information on those domains do not represent Fedora Latam any more.

While we as latam can have other domain and used it was important to have the domains that many people promote for many years.

When you believe on what your doing and your community even, if you don't want to be part of it for what ever reason you have, you should not block it is development or harm it. This is what is happening on latam with those domains are doing more harm that good.

We are working on another domain so we can move all the links on wiki and fedoraproject.org web page to the new domains.

We have knows about the possibility to have *.fedoracommunity.org domains for local communities,  I know it will be much work, but I rater have it to avoid issues like this in the future.

Flisol Panamá 2013

Flisol (Festival Latioamericano de instalación de Software Libre) for its acronym in Spanish, is an event that has been around since 2005 in Panama, this year coordinated by Abdel Martinez, it took place at UTP

This year we share this experience with over 300 students and free software
enthusiasts. The event was has talks, workshops and installations.

It was really nice to meet face to face  with fellow fedorians from the Panama community, we all share task around the event from talks to installations, we also share with fellows from other local communities.

I took the task to talk about Icaro project, and show some Icaro robots, but there were too much task an people that stop me for doing the demos.

Overall it was a great event and we meet old friends and new ones.

Looking forward for the next event this year.

Hackaton agains domestic violence Panamá

There has been many good post about our experience on the first hackaton in Panama, yea first as far as I know.

To me the best part of it was the opportunist to talk to some of our government agencies about open Data, and even do may of them did not have a really good idea of what a hackaton was and what they can archive on it they got an idea about inter-operation and how the Open source technology can bring them the answers to many of their issues.

As always the most difficult task was handle by our friend David Narvaez who tackle design and interactions with government agencies, to illuminate them is always a really complex task, but seems like they got the idea, so great job David. His post about the hackaton can be read here.

We work with Diego Tejera Paco whos blog post you can read here and Alexis Hevia and our challenge has its complexity but divide with brilliant  people any task can be easy, our main goal was to develop a poll site that can handle statistics, and reports about domestic violence, those reports include dynamic maps with stats, Alexis deal with that his post about hackaton can be read here.   But we wanted to show how that data can be as transparent and free to use that we added csv downloads and query with json result so it can be used to build other apps or more.

The team from Santiago de Veraguas lead by Gary Lezama, a group of UTP students that deside to participate in the hackaton work on the alert button app. We hope to see them again on other events in Panama.

This opportunities are elusive in Panama, so we hope next year we can repeat this experience and we have more government agencies, students and other interested parties  participating.

It was a great opportunity to meet new faces and share experiences with people from outside Panama city.

Thanks for the organizers, judges and staff.

New year, new challanges

As you all know now, the world did not end, so we have to face a new year with new challenges and goals.

This new year seems to be full of activities, normally the year starts kind of slow on Panama, main reason it is summer, so schools are vacations, universities activities are off and communities do not meet as often. But this year we are getting to a really good start:

The first event of the year is the Fedora Release Party, to be at the community center, on Jan 12, 2013.

Trisfera group has already announce their summer camp if you are new to coding or want to learn web and gaming coding join this group and learn it is free.

UTP university will host the hackaton again domestic violence so if you like to collaborate with code for a social cause, please join us we will be there.

Floss-pa community has a schedule off all workshops to be held this summer, please join us learn and share.

Please remember the Flisol 2012, well get ready for Flisol 2013.

Have a great 2013, please keep in touch and participate with all this events.
